Music

Curriculum Intent

At Spa Academy, we aim to develop our children’s creativity and cultivate a love of music. Through our music curriculum, children are exposed to music from a range of genres and time periods and investigate a plethora of artists to gain an understanding of the impact that music has had on the world.

We utilise Kapow as a resource for our music curriculum. Through ambitious music lessons, children develop their musical skills of singing and responding in the correct time to music and builds on the prior knowledge gained from the KS1 music curriculum.  Children develop vocabulary and skills to prepare them to be successful music learners at secondary school.  Additionally, children learn to play tuned and untuned instruments, read and play to simple notation whilst recognising beats both by ear and as written, compose and improvise appropriately to music. Through the implementation of these practical skills, children develop transferable skills such as confidence, critical-thinking, teamwork, resilience, creativity and presentation and performance skills.

Children work collaboratively to share their opinions in order to appraise and evaluate a wide range of musical styles.  They communicate confidently and begin to develop an ear for music.  They are encouraged to be respectful regarding others views and performances, praising and critiquing each other.
